Food and Wine Piedmont Italy

This food and wine Piedmont trip is in Italy’s northwest and borders Switzerland and France. True to the meaning of its name (foot of the mountain), Piedmont is a land of mountains….and wine! Monferrato (where La Villa is located) is just 45mins from the areas that produce Barolo and Barbaresco wines. What’s not to love about a long weekend in Italy’s finest wine region. Great food, great wine (best to visit in truffle season!) and stunning vistas.

LA VILLA HOTEL, MOMBARUZZO

This former, rustic but chic farmhouse, is set among Piedmont’s rolling hills and vineries. The hotel is family run and is uniquely decorated with local pieces, some sourced from local antiques fairs and the outdoor pool provides excellent views of the surrounding vineyards.

This is a home from home. The owners make you feel so welcome from the minute your set foot into their beautifully restored villa. The rooms are comfortable and have stunning views across the vineyards of the area. Their in house restaurant is incredible! – a must if you stay here, and even if you don’t! They will also arrange everything for you, from winery visits to truffle hunts!

Fancy a drink? try the Barolos and Barbarescos or anything else available from the hotel cellar boasting over 5000 bottles.

ALBA's TRUFFLES in this FOOD AND WINE PIEDMONT TRIP

If you visit in October, Alba’s truffle fair is a must visit with many restaurants in the area focusing their menu on this culinary delight!

BARBARESCO

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of the Piedmont region and historically it was called Nebbiolo (Nebbiolo being the grape it’s made from) and the wine is often compared with Barolo, another Nebbiolo based wine. Though the wines do share many similarities, the soil differences mean the Barbaresco doesn’t exude as much tannin as Barolo, meaning the tannin won’t hit you quite as hard.

A stunning town with some of the big players in the region such as Gaja. There is a tower to climb giving a great vantage point over the region, and on some days, even wine tastings in the local church! Amen to that!

If we had more time… more vineyards!

If we had less time… focus on Barbaresco as it epitomises all things Piedmont for me!
